Gluing modified wood

Accoya

Recommended adhesive

  • Do not use water-based adhesives (too high a water content; does not provide a permanent bond).
  • 1C PUR adhesives are recommended, but with a significantly longer clamping time due to low wood moisture content.
  • Semparoc 60 is specifically recommended for solid wood in protected outdoor areas.

User Tips

  • Sanding is not very effective.
  • Clean the bonding surfaces with soapy water*.
  • Use caution when working with metal fasteners (acetic acid can corrode metal surfaces).

* The tip about using soapy water is easy to follow, but it requires care. Improper use can lead to undesirable results. We are happy to assist you in using it safely and effectively.

Kebony

Recommended adhesive

  • 1C PUR adhesives do not require extended pressing time, provided the wood moisture content is >7%.
  • Do not use water-based adhesives (too high a water content; does not provide a permanent bond).
  • Semparoc 60 is specifically designed for solid wood in protected outdoor areas.

User Tips

  • Sand only lightly (100–150 grit).
  • Do not apply excessive pressure or sand too quickly (to avoid overheating the wood surface).
  • Excessive sanding will seal the surface → resulting in poorer wetting properties.

Smoked oak

Characteristics

  • Not a true modification, but rather a cosmetic enhancement; the dark color is achieved using ammonia.
  • A high tannin content (especially in oak and chestnut) results in an intense color.

Recommended adhesive

  • 1C PUR adhesives: Risk of under-curing due to residual ammonia → Adhesive remains soft.
  • Water-based adhesives: A shift in pH can interfere with film formation and adhesion.

User Tips

  • Smell test: If there is a strong smell of ammonia, the residual ammonia content is too high and gluing is not yet possible.
  • Solid smoked oak must be allowed to air out completely after cutting and before gluing.

Thermo-treated wood

Characteristics

  • Reduced moisture absorption, increased brittleness, lower strength.
  • Altered surface chemistry.

Recommended adhesive

  • Do not use epoxy resins; generally, avoid adhesives that are too brittle.
  • Adhesives with some elasticity are preferred.

User Tips

  • 1C PUR adhesives and water-based adhesives require 2–3 times the clamping time.
  • No heavy sanding required.
  • Use soapy water* for cleaning, especially on hardwoods such as thermally modified ash or thermally modified robinia.

* The tip about using soapy water is easy to follow, but it requires care. Improper use can lead to undesirable results. We are happy to assist you in using it safely and effectively.
